Weevil

Weevil - May 2022

Sometimes I find it quite difficult to decide which image was my favourite of the week, but this week, it was probably the easiest decision I've ever had to make.

This stunning little chap is a Weevil, and has the scientific name of Polydrusus formosus. It's the first time I've seen such a brightly coloured Weevil, and I was so pleased to be able to photograph him during my photo shoot in dad's garden this week.

Ant Attack - May 2022

The warm weather had brought out quite a few insects this week, and most were happy for me to point my camera at them. However, this Black Garden Ant (Lasius niger) seemed to be quite offended, and postured as though he was going to attack!

Hoverfly - May 2022

This Hoverfly (Syrphidae) couldn't care less whether I photographed it or not, as it was too caught up in sampling the delights of the Dandelion (Taraxacum) pollen.

Greenbottle - May 2022

There were lots of Greenbottle (Lucilia caesar) flies around this week, and quite a few of them posed in the sunlight, which reflected well off their metallic looking bodies.

Bluebottle - May 2022

The Bluebottle (Calliphora vomitoria) flies were a bit more skittish, and this one flew away before I could get a decent shot of it.

Bramble Bloom Visitor - May 2022

There were plenty of new blooms appearing in the garden as the weather warmed up, and this Bramble (Rubus fruticosus) bush bloom had attracted a long legged fly visitor.

Honey Bee - May 2022

The Cotoneaster bushes had begun to flower already, and there were almost as many Honey Bees (Apis mellifera) visiting as there were blooms to visit.

Wood Avens - May 2022

The little yellow flowers of the Wood Avens (Geum urbanum) plants had returned, like most weeds do, but I quite liked the look of this one.

The First One - May 2022

The Firethorn (Pyracantha) bushes were generating lots and lots of flower buds, and this was the first flower I managed to spot.

Oxalis - May 2022

The Oxalis flowers were also beginning to appear, although I thought it was a little early for them.

Cuckooflower - May 2022

The Cuckooflowers (Cardamine pratensis) were bang on time for the time of year, as one of their other common names is the Mayflower.

Tutsan Bud - May 2022

Finally, the Tutsan (Hypericum androsaemum) bush flower buds weren't far away from opening, and their flowers will probably appear in next week's article.

So this week I went with Weevil as my Image of the Week simply because I thought it was a stunning looking insect, and it was the first time I'd seen this particular species...
